     About Us

Pancreatic Cancer is the deadliest of all major cancer diseases with a 5 year survival rate of only 5%.  Prostate cancer and breast cancer have 5 year survival rates of 99% and 89%.  Pancreatic Cancer is also unfortunately one of the most under funded diseases by the federal government.  Most funding for cancer research comes to the National Cancer Institute (NCI) from the U.S. government through the National Institute of Health (NIH).

The U.S. government funds on average $3,307 of research dollars per new cancer case.

But the federal government is only currently allocating $1,972 of research dollars per new case of pancreatic cancer.

When analyzing how much money is allocated to research based on cancer deaths per year a greater disparity in funding is even more apparent as only $2,173 is allocated per cancer death.

Breast Cancer receives $14,147 a year per cancer death (6.5 times more than pancreatic cancer).
Prostate Cancer receives
$10,946 a year per cancer death (5 times more than pancreatic cancer).
Colorectal Cancer receives
$4,952 a year per cancer death (2.3 times more than pancreatic cancer).

This under funding contributes to the lethality of the disease. Great advances have been made in treating breast cancer and prostate cancer due to appropriate funding levels.  Almost no meaningful advances have been made in pancreatic cancer treatment since the Whipple procedure (tumor removal) was invented and perfected.  In fact the 5 year survival rate in the early 1970s (3%) is about the same as the rate today (5%).

A large commitment is needed to stop pancreatic cancer from being so fatal to so many.  Though it afflicts nearly 5 times less people than breast cancer each year it almost takes as many lives every year.  We need a huge investment to draw new minds and talents to fight this disease and to find much more reliable and accurate early detection methods.
